Our program is federally legislated under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. It provides alternatives to the court system for young people who experience conflict with the law between their 12th and 17th birthdays. The crown attorney’s office is the gatekeeper for referrals for suitable candidates. The program operates under the administration of provincial policy and is overseen by a social work liaison who works collaboratively with the committee. Our committee is a registered non-profit organization.
The Program Aims To:
- Provide early intervention
- Provide a forum for youth to accept responsibility
- Educate young people
- Promote community involvement
- Encourage harmony between youth, victims and the community
- Avoid the stigma of formal court proceedings
- Repair harm done to victims
- Provide a response that is meaningful for every individual
