What is Extrajudicial Sanctions (EJS)?
EJS is a restorative justice program authorized under the Youth Criminal Justice Act to provide alternatives to the court system for young people who experience conflict with the law between their 12th and 17th birthday.
Why Get Involved?
• We understand. No one wants to be the victim of a crime.
• Your voice will be heard.
• The young person is held accountable to you as the victim and they assume ownership of their mistakes.
• You won’t be alone. We will assist you throughout
the process respecting your wishes.
• We will work diligently to clue up the matter quickly.
• Even if you do not want to be directly involved you can still talk to us about the outcome.

How Can I Get Involved?
The EJS Program offers two paths to resolution. If you choose to become involved, you or a representative could meet with the young person through a trained mediator for mediation. If you choose not to be involved, the youth can participate through a diversion. This means that they would meet with a trained mediator, take responsibility for their actions, and a contract would be drawn up with expectations for completion.

What is Mediation?
Mediation allows victims and young people to meet in a safe space with a trained mediator. It is an open and honest discussion between the victim and youth, which allows you both to tell your side of the story and respond to concerns about how you were affected.
As a neutral third party, the mediator ensures both parties can safely come to an
agreement that provides a solution in which the young person can give back for their actions and the victim’s voice is heard. Some contract conditions may include:
apologies, personal service, restitution, community service, written or art
assignments, attendance in an educational program, meeting with an RNC officer, or participating in counselling.
